Welcome Message

Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Council for Opportunity in Education (COE), I would like to welcome you to the 40th Annual Conference.

Whether you are attending virtually or in-person, we are excited to have you join us. Your attendance reflects your commitment to the ideals of college access and success for all. I hope you take time to reflect on the role you played over the past year to move forward services for low-income, first-generation communities, as well as those with disabilities, our country’s Veterans, and those underrepresented in higher education.

This year’s conference theme, 40 years of Good Trouble: Equity, Access & Success, reflects the roots of the TRIO programs in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960’s. The theme honors the late John Lewis, an individual who devoted his life to justice and equity, much like COE and TRIO professionals have done over the past four decades. I congratulate Conference Co-Chairs Michael Maxwell and Joshua Engler and their dedicated conference volunteers for assembling a hybrid national conference, one accessible to all college access and success professionals.

Today, I reflect on the past year serving all of you as your Board Chair. I started this board year uncertain and unsure. I ended this board year confident and overwhelmed. I feel confident because COE had a record year in our advocacy, through professional development, and in our ability to come together. I am overwhelmed because it has been a great honor and humbling privilege to serve as this year’s Board Chair. Today, I take a breath, ready and excited to engage with you throughout this year’s event.

Sincerely,

2020-2021 Board Chair

Sari Byerly, Ph.D.
